OK guys, after some digging I found the player development news item in the league file and decided to take a stab at it (finally got some real use for my mad Excel skills, hehe). Please find attached at the bottom of this post the iNHL Development Report for October 2015. It is slightly delayed but should hopefully be an interesting read for all you stat nuts out there (myself included). The report comes in both Excel and Word format; the Word file is basically just what the news item looks like, while in the Excel file you can sort for leagues/teams/players. Until this is fixed in-game, I plan to release this on a monthly basis. Have a good Friday! - bjernagris (PHI)

I was just thinking the other day that I wanted something like this. I took this data and loaded it into a pivot table.

Yeah I was thinking to create a pivot so you can track player development over time. This looks super nice, I'll work on it with the November development update during today!

Please find below the iNHL Monthly Development Report for November! Since FHM2 does not currently have a very good way to track player development over time, I thought it would be nice to provide this to you. Pulse and I have created a Pivot table that lets you track how your players have progressed since the start of the season. So far only two months' developments are included, but we will include future months' reports as the season unfolds. For those of you who are not familiar with Pivot tables, here is a snapshot of what the interface looks like and some instructions on how you can use it to customize the data you are looking at. If you have any questions or suggestions for improvement, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Something I find fairly interesting is to see which team has developed, as a whole, the most so far this season. I.e. which team's coaches are doing a very good job, and who should consider re-tuning their training arrangements? Here is the list of net skill increases by team (NHL rosters only):
Oilers 20 Capitals 19 Hurricanes 18 Maple Leafs 18 Canadiens 16 Blue Jackets 15 Canucks 15 Senators 15 Kings 14 Sabres 14 Flyers 14 Islanders 14 Flames 13 Blackhawks 13 Sharks 13 Blues 13 Lightning 13 Wild 11 Panthers 11 Rangers 10 Predators 10 Jets 9 Red Wings 9 Ducks 6 Coyotes 6 Bruins 6 Penguins 5 Stars 4 Devils 4 Avalanche 3

My roster is old, so ill take this 29th place with a grain of salt

Yeah I bet that has a lot to do with it. Bruins at only 6 skill gains should be a worry though, although I believe their goalies dropped a few points which decreases the overall score.

Does anyone one know of any source for info on the games training system? Like in-depth info, so you can make good decisions. I feel like I'm just making assumptions when making my training plans. Some questions I have...
Is it better to train a player on multiple areas, or focus on one. Is there a benefit either way?
What factors affect development and by how much? Age, hidden attributes, mood, etc...
What's the risk of not training a player, if they are scratched or dressed ?

Game is still screwing with Goalies.
Sim before I had two games. Asked for Raanta to be in net for the second. That worked ok.
Last night I had Lunqvist in the top spot, no instructions and Raanta started both. Fortunately we won them.

If you go onto the FHM2 start screen and click on the 'manual' link down toward the bottom left hand side, there's a whole section in there about training, so hopefully that might give you some pointers. There have also been a number of questions about player development asked on the OOTP forums, including some by myself in this thread here: www.ootpdevelopments.com/board/fhm-2-general-discussions/258915-quick-questions-thread-42.htmland here: www.ootpdevelopments.com/board/fhm-2-general-discussions/258915-quick-questions-thread-43.html#post3940281

I am super impressed by how some GMs put together game data here. I wonder if I am missing something but it seems like a lot of work, so thank you!
Now let me argue with the results....My net of 6 should also be taken with a grain of salt.
I basically have two types of players on my roster: prospects and vets. There's almost 0 middle ground players who neither improve nor decline. And they basically wash each other out:
Guys like Pastrnak, Spooner, Etem, Namestnikov have improved. Guys like Medvedev, Umberger (when he was here), Nikitin, Kelly, Gustavsson, Emery have declined. (Even Subban who was injured in the preseason has managed to improve!)
Where my franchise has improved is with non-roster players like Zacha, Provorov, DeBrusk, Honka, Zboril, Lauzon, Grzelcyk, Fitzgerald, Heinen, Donato. Draisaitl and Fiala have just recently been added to my roster so not sure if their development is included.
I am not replacing Claude Julien!!!!!

AHL players and contracted prospects can be found on the report but I'm not sure if Bjorn aggregated them into his franchise totals. Uncontracted prospects such as Lauzon, DeBrusk etc. don't seem to be on the spreadsheet. I assume this is because they're not on the original report from which the data was extracted rather than that they haven't progressed.

I would think I'd have more declining players but if contracted prospects are included, that would make up for it for sure.

Yeah there is no good way to aggregate players into franchise totals. You will have to tick the individual boxes for the teams you want to view. For example I tick Flyers, Phantoms and Royals to view the players I have under contract. Our unsigned prospects are not included in the raw data.

I also heard moving players around reset the counter somehow. So when you move players around from ahl to nhl at the end of the month instead of the beginning i think you wont see them improve. Guessing trades impact that too.

So this is interesting. Jeff indicates that players can receive increases of +1 per month for each category, but in practice I don't see that happening. We have two full months of development so far, and I don't see a single player across the iNHL universe that has increased their stats by more than +2. If it does happen, its something that is so rare, I'm not even sure its worth mentioning except as an afterthought.
This would indicate to me that it is better to have a player focus on one area for development each month to ensure the increase is within the category you want, but something about that seems off as well. If there is no guarantee that a player will receive an increase for that category, perhaps its better to spread the focus of training a bit more?
The manual helps a lot with the concept, but doesn't help much as far as applying a strategy. If only I had more free time to mine some data and run through some various scenarios....
One last question on this topic. If we are able to see a development report like this, how does scouting work for us? It wouldn't make sense to have a league wide dev report, and then show varied player ratings depending on which owner logged in.

Oh no not at all, I'm just wondering how it works. Do I see different player ratings than another owner would see? If that is the case, is the dev report we are seeing an account of the dev as identified by the flyers scouting department?

No, these are the actual skill improvements. They are released in a message each month but for some reason only Dax gets them in his in-game message inbox. However, they can still be found in the \FHM 2\data\saved_games\The iNHL.lg\messages\ folder. Look for message582 and message911 in that folder and you will find them.

So its possible that I will see a + 1 to say...shot blocking for dev, but when I look directly, the value of shot blocking would be the same as it has always been, because my scout didnt pickup the dev change?

I haven't checked but I guess it is possible. I hope I can see correct values for at least my own players though.

Trust me, scouting is essential in the game - remember our Parayko talks? Initially he showed up on my side as the second coming of Al Iafrate, rating-wise and after i scouted him with 3 scouts, not so much anymore

Individual messages in-game. Unfortunately the December '15 development was lost when we had league file issues, thus no Development Report for that month...
