Yikes... I'll be quite honest fellas, I'm certainly having a hard time understanding this one. Essentially the Jackets are relieving itself of 5 million in cap space and giving up quite possibly two future stars to recieve a 1.75M grinder and a mid round pick. Now I didn't rate the prospects but A. Madaisky seems like he's destined to become something big with the ratings he's been given and S. Milano is obviously star material. Bad contracts for Bad contracts with lesser years and a sweetner makes more sense in relieving capspace (Lecavalier, Umberger, McDonald.. sorry Philly!) I would think Arizona's first rounder would have made a better starting point. I'll wait to hear what the other committee members have to say and if they don't mind or this deal makes sense to them then I don't see why it should be veto'd, I'm just weighing in is all.

I see how you may be concerned, however it depends on how you look at it. Clarkson is a 31 year old 3 star player who is making 5.25mil with 5 years left on the contract. That is huge to a team like Arizona where we have one of, if not the lowest budgets in the league (not even close to the salary cap). Madaisky is 23 (turning 24 in January) and unlikely to develop much more. His current ability is less than minimal for NHL and it is unlikely he will reach his full listed potential. Milano is a good prospect and maybe one day be strong player, I cannot argue that. Downie is a player who can contribute in all areas of the ice. He could be a value asset on any teams 2nd or 3rd line and has an excellent contract. The 3rd Rounder is to add more balance to the trade.

Still familiarizing myself with the potentials... It seems most if not all the young prospects all over the league have an overrated appeal to them in terms of comparison to the hockey stars and regular core players. Take a player like D. Keith and compare him to a Madaisky and the potentials would reflect the next coming of an offensive juggernaut lol. I'm guessing after a certain age and as the player ages that potential ability starts to deplete itself awfully quick and can produce a false indication with a high potential number looking at that player edit screen eh lol ?
I guess it all makes sense to me anyways.

I am okay with this trade. In my view, CBJ paid a lot to get rid of arguably the worst cap hit in the league and AZ is getting big time compensation for taking it on.

While it may not be balanced, we're not talking about star power being moved around and relieving yourself of a contract could be good incentive to send along prospects with potential if you have some depth there. I'm ok.
One more thing, going forward. I think we'd be better to simply note that we have question or concerns and ask the GMs to offer justification (as Arizona did here) rather than suggest other options. Our goal should be to review and decide, not guide the teams. My opinion, anyway.

This looks like a cap dump to me and I can see why a GM would pay that price to clear up 5.25M and get back a decent depth player and a 3rd rounder.

It seems like you guys have pretty much figured out what we were doing here. A couple points from me:
The prospects we traded, while have the potential to be good (4 stars), aren't projected to be All-Stars (4.5) or Franchise players (5). I'm also trading both from a position of depth within the Blue Jackets organization. It was a price to pay to move Clarkson's horrid contract and still get a player that upgrades our very weak RW situation. Getting Downie and being rid of Clarkson is an improvement for the team this year which plans on contending for the playoffs. Also, this salary dump may make more sense soon if another deal I'm trying to swing goes through in which we are taking on salary. Columbus not being a major market doesn't help. I think Arizona is getting good value to pick up the salary to help stay above the cap floor.

I'm okay with this. It's a power move for sure but it gives Arizona some potential middle 6 talent while boosting their cap and Columbus gets a solid middle 6 guy coming back in Downie. I may have to think about making a cap move for the up coming season as well. After trading Buff I'm teetering pretty close to the salary floor.
