Sources inside the Rangers organization say had the team gotten off to a better start Ryan McDonagh would have been resigned. But, facing a restructure, the team didn't want to start with a cap-eating veteran contract, even one where the player is worth it.
The move was still curious considering starting goalie Jaroslav Halak was one of the top goalies in the league last season (2.36, .923). And, despite a shaky start this year, Halak has posted a 1.75 GA in his last eight games. However, word is GM Mike Best has been high on Michael Hutchinson since King Henry went on the block. Hutchinson also is 5-0 against the Rangers over the past three seasons, including an 0.80 GA and three shutouts.
