Rumor is the Rangers are desperately trying to move veteran defenseman Cam Fowler to clear cap room for additional trades and that the ask has been low.
General Manager Mike Best yesterday refused to confirm or deny the rumor but defended Fowler. "If Cam starts the season with us he will be first pair again with Leddy. They played at an all-star level together a few years ago with 100 points combined and among the plus-minus leaders and are still at their prime. We know that works."
Fowler's minutes dipped last year after suffering back problems and with the team's desire to play younger offensive blueliners Vince Dunn and Ryan Shea. The two split time with Leddy on the first pairing. Leddy's defensive play remains at a high level but his offensive numbers, like Fowler's, also suffered last year.
When asked what the pairings will look this season, Best said, "If things stay the way the are it will be Fowler-Leddy back together, Dunn-Foskey and Shea-Shattenkirk but the minutes will be split pretty evenly." Frederic Allard and Mikhail Sidorov will supply depth.
