Pending League approval, the Ottawa Senators are pleased to announce the following trade with the Washington Capitals:
Ottawa Senators trade: D Fredrik Claesson C Shane Prince C Zack Smith RW Alex Chiasson
Washington Capitals trade: LW Marcus Johansson C Jay Beagle A Conditional 6th round draft pick in 2016*
Senators management confirms this trade.
* If the Senators are unable to sign Marcus Johansson to an extension then the 6th round pick becomes a 2nd round pick in 2017. If Johansson signs an extension then there is no change; the pick remains in the 6th round in 2016.
-Edited to reflect a discussed change between GM's-

Good trade but shouldn't the pick become a 2nd rounder IF Johansson signs an extension? I've never seen a pick go up in value if a team does not sign the player they traded for. Not saying it can't happen, but curious as to why.

My intention is to sign Marcus Johansson, in which case, the 6th round pick is acceptable. However, if I'm unable to sign him (Cap troubles, he doesn't like Ottawa, he doesn't like me, etc.), then what I'm receiving in the trade is de-valued because I lose this player from my roster (although he'll be an RFA so I will retain his rights). Thus, we agreed to put this condition in place (pick changing from a 6th to a 2nd) that would offer the Senators some sort of compensation if Johansson were to choose to sign elsewhere. That was my reasoning, anyway. I don't know if I can think of an occurrence exactly like this in the NHL, but generally I think conditional draft picks are given/received for various reasons (making/not making the playoffs, performance, contract, etc.) and in various different forms of ascending or descending value (changing years, changing rounds etc.). However, just to be clear, whatever the League decides; I'm totally fine with. I won't make waves. Hopefully, Johansson likes Ottawa (a Stanley Cup would help ), and this will be a non-issue.

Capitals agree. We hate losing a guy like MJ90, but we feel like we won't have the cap space to really make an extension work so to get some value in return now was ideal. Likewise, the overall depth of the roster was lacking and adding younger guys like Prince, Claesson, and Chiasson will help the franchise long term.

Correct, many times a pick is going in the opposite direction of the player...and in that case the value of the pick would decrease as the value of the player increases to the team that acquired him...in this case the pick is going with the player in reverse action. I am banking on MoJo staying in Ottawa, so I feel comfortable potentially mortgaging an increased draft value if for some reason the Senators can't retain him. For the Capitals, the value in assets coming our way...including a player in Chiasson who I feel can compare to Johansson in our system is worth the chance. Chiasson is the same age as MoJo and locked up for 3 more years at a value much less than Johansson will ask for in an extension/FA. That alone is worth taking the chance in draft pick compensation.

Yes I totally misread and saw the pick going the other way. Sorry for the confusion! No objections to this trade.

Again no serious objections but one clarification: The Sens could sign Johansson to an extension after the 2016 draft but before free agency. In this scenario, I assume a 2017 pick can be used? (Short of the Sens trading Johansson, I can't think of a way we could actually know the Sens will not sign him to extension before the 2016 draft occurs...but obviously I've been wrong before .)

That is a fair question. Maybe, if the Wash. GM agrees, we should change the compensation pick to a 2nd rounder in the 2017 draft thereby negating this possibility. Thoughts?

Ha ha, yeah, this year's draft is better. I will edit the original post to reflect that change.

I'm leaving the pick out of the equation so it's up to you guys to make sure to tell me what has happened on the conditions of the pick and I'll swap it in the game.

Johansson has signed an extension with the Sens, so the conditional DP can be transferred now. To be clear, Washington's 2016 6th pick will be sent to Ottawa.
