So I have a question or two about player movement within an organization.
1) Waivers - I think I have this figured out but want to make sure. If I want to demoted a player to a minor league team, if he is waiver eligible, he goes to waivers before being demoted?
2) Can you just release guys? If do which team's salary cap does it effect? (or all teams the player is contracted to)
3) What is the protected list?
I'm sure I'll have more. And probably screw this team up as I figure all this out.

Hi Mike, 1) Yes, and that means any other team can claim the waived player from you 2) You can only release contracted players during the offseason. The three options you have for getting rid of contracted players during the season is 1) trade them to another team 2) place them on waivers and hope that someone else picks them up 3) treat them like crap and hope that they will retire 3) I think the protected list is only relevant in case of expanding the league, in the related expansion draft. Each team gets to protect a certain # of their contracted players that the expansion teams can't draft. I might be wrong here so if someone else knows this please answer Mike! Re screwing up your team: if you would happen to make a move that you regret before sending in your teamfile, remember you can always back out and start over by exiting without saving (CTRL-ALT-DEL method) and then restarting the game.

I expect to somehow completely screw up the cap

I'm hoping we slow down in the off season and discuss implications and timing of various GM tasks.
Cap, resigning players, need to resign minor leaguers, need to sign previously draft but as yet unsigned players, when we can sign players from other leagues we own right to, free agency, etc, etc, etc

You can keep track of your cap situation for the current and future seasons in "Salary Obligations". Worst case you can always dump some players in the offseason - if the buyout rules work as in the real NHL (someone please verify) 1/3 of the dumped player's cap hit is counted against your cap for twice the contract time.

I think at least around the entry draft and during the first week or two of FA signing period, we should consider slowing down to two sims per in-game week.

I believe protected list is also a snapshot of every player in your organization be it in the NHL/AHL/juniors/or unsigned players you have the rights of. Pretty much everyone that is property of your organization and therefore unable to be signed by other teams.

This is how I go through all of the other GM's players in a simple sort-able way to figure out which ones I want to poach.
