Matt Gough: Thanks, Merci, to everyone for coming by. We'll try to keep this as quick as possible .
Today Geoff and myself have come to the decision that Michel Therrien will be relieved of his coaching duties here in Montreal. We would like to thank Michel for his services with the Canadians organization, and we wish him all the best moving forward in his career.
It should come as no surprise that we haven't been happy with the way our club has started the season. We have a very talented group of guys on our roster, and ultimately neither Geoff or I felt that we were getting the most out of them with Michel behind the bench.
Canadians Facilitator: We will now have a brief question period
Renaud Lavoie: Were there a number of things that came together in Michel being let go, or is it strictly to find a change up?
Matt Gough: We've been assessing our coaching for some time now Renaud. We weren't happy with some stints during the season last year, and another first round upset didn't help us out either. After a strong pre season we had hoped that good things were coming for this club, but we've hit a rough patch very early, and we felt it's better to do this now than to wait for more disappointment ahead.
John Lu: Is this completely on the Michel Therrien? The Canadians roster has struggled defensively to start the season, and losing Max Pacioretty was a big blow to your first line.
Matt Gough: There's no question there's blame on both parties. We aren't happy with our play. That being said, we do feel that our players need to have an opportunity to play in a system that fits their talents, and so we'll be considering that in looking for Michels replacement.
François Gagnon: So you do not have a replacement at this time?
Matt Gough: I'd like to think we're close François. We've already reached out to a couple of coaches. We have one guy in particular who we feel would be right for the position, but we're not rushing things at this point, we want the guy we hire to be here for many years to come.
Pierre Lebrun: Will you be making any moves to address the teams defence?
Matt Gough: No, at this time we don't plan on making any changes to our club. We like our roster and we hope they will succeed with a fresh start. However when the new coach has the reigns, we will be listening to his opinion on players, playing styles, who fits and who doesn't.
Canadians Facilitator: That will be all the time we have for today, thank you, Merci.
