in the recent three game home stand the Colorado Avalanche went an unimpressive 1-1-1. On the surface that does not look like a successful first week for the new man in charge. A little bit closer look at this week actually shows that there are some things to be very happy about. While not a 3-0 start as any and all new managers would love to see in their new teams first week played the team scored 12 goals lead by rookie phenom Austin Mathews with four of those goals scored by himself.
The ability this young team has so early on to play together and put the puck in the back of the net is something to be admired for sure. It is hard for one not to become very optimistic about this franchises future when you start to imagine what some of these young players like Mathews mackinon landeskog etc. will be playing like when they hit the prime of their carrer maybe at 26? If the core of this team can stay together that long there will be many iNHL scoring records smashed you can mark my words on that one Crappa said at the recent press conference.
While the scoring has been a treat to behold there are many things that are of concern to the new manager as well. In those first three games we gave up an unacceptable 13 goals against. This is something that is just plain NOT acceptable any longer Denver. While not really sure what former GM Tonys tactics were on defense Crappa sees areas that could be greatly improved upon immediately. Others he aqknowledged will take a bit longer. The majority of their D core is comprised of young 20 year old players. While the development of a player can take some time the work, effort and how hard the players work in practice and games can be adjusted. There will no longer be a game that the players are "Ok" with getting shalacked and letting 6 goals go in. The whole team seemed a bit shocked when Crappa came in with some harsh words after the 6-4 loss to the Bruins at home. While no players will go on record to say what these harsh words were exactly they sure seemed to have the desired effect as the next game out they pulled out a hard fought 4-3 win against a tough Senators team who is working hard to move up and better their spot in the standings.
Crappa will continue to try to get the best out of his young team and help to develop and build the team chemistry there is also starting to be some rumors that he may also be looking to make a few changes. While the vetran leadership of the older players in the locker room are sure to have a positive effect on the young players Crappa seems to feel that the team is still a couple core pieces away from being a perennial championship contender.
Many general managers would be wise to inquier with Crappa as he has stated openly that while he does not believe in any one player being "untouchable" on any team. To do that would be irresponsible to the franchise. If someone would be silly enough to offer some form of MASSIVE overpayment that not only improves the team right away but in the long term then you have to atleast consider what they are offering.
