Important announcement regarding the future of the iNHL
Hello all iNHL GMs,
It has been more than a year since the iNHL was founded and took its first baby steps towards becoming what it is today. The league has been up-and-running for a little less than 11 months now, and all you GMs have been part in shaping the league into what it has become. The Skype group, the live streamed sims, the podcast (more to come on that one!), the Youtube videos, the Cup statuette being shipped around the world (well, North America), the accurate draft classes, the TRB, the CRB… I think we should all be proud of the little community we have created here. We have just finished our third season, and have seen three different teams hoist the iCup – congratulations Chris, Rob and Sebastién!
With the rNHL set to start their 2016/17 season in about a month’s time, and OOTP planning the release of FHM3 – their next instalment in the FHM series – around that point, we are now faced with a delicate decision; how do we proceed from here? We will have more information from OOTP this coming Friday (Sep 16th), but want to get the discussion going already at this point on what route the iNHL should take from here.
The Exec Board has decided to put the iNHL into a freeze, effective immediately. We will cease simming until a decision has been taken by vote regarding the future of the league - please see more below. Trades are still allowed to be posted with the understanding that they might not be processed, or that they might be skewed in terms of value, depending on chosen option.
This vote is contingent on if and when FHM3 is actually released. Before we decide how to proceed we need to know the official release date. OOTP has yet to communicate this and we will set a deadline for their announcement to Sep 17th.
- If no release date has been announced by Sep 17th, or if the release date is Nov 1st or later, this vote is cancelled and we will run another season in FHM2 starting with the 2018 iNHL Entry Draft held on Sep 24th
- If an October release date is announced by Sep 17th, the deadline for casting your vote in this matter will be Sep 20th @ 2.00pm EST and a decision regarding the future of the league will be based off of this vote, announced immediately thereafter.
Before going into our different options, let us be open about this; looking at scenarios from individual GMs’ points of view, there will be winners and losers regardless of how we choose to proceed. GMs will have made decisions based on what seems reasonable based on FHM2 parameters but Benning-esque based on FHM3 parameters, or vice versa.
So, what options does the iNHL have going forward?
1) Status quo – remain in FHM2 for X more seasons
This option requires no change. We keep running the league on the FHM2 platform until a certain point in time before taking a new decision on how to proceed. If we choose this option, we need to decide on how many more seasons we want to stay on the FHM2 platform before moving over to FHM3, and the pace at which we should sim them. The advantage of this option is that it is the easiest and probably most fair route to take. The drawback is that we will miss out on the improvements, new database and new features of FHM3.
2) Full reset – move over to FHM3 and start over fresh
This option means starting out a new league in 2016/17 in FHM3, with rosters authentic to the real NHL. The advantage would be that it allows us to play on the new platform with a new database. The drawback is that we will lose all the progress (trades, player development etc.) that have happened in FHM2
3) Full carryover – move over to FHM3 and continue the iNHL starting in the 2018/19 season
This option means starting a new league in FHM3, simming forward to the 2018 offseason, replicate rosters, contracts, player rights and draft picks for each team and continuing where we left off in FHM2.
- We would need to decide whether to hold the 2018 iDraft in FHM2 or in FHM3
- Player attributes would not be transferred because of the amount of work required; we would use FHM3 ratings. An exception would be that each team would be allowed to elect 2 roster players and 2 prospects who’s ratings would be transferred as accurately as possible, and 2 players that they have signed/traded for that they want to release without cost.
The Exec Board also wants to clarify that our intention on transferring from FHM3 to FHM4, if such a scenario would present itself, is to carry over the league and continue where we will have left off. We do not want the iNHL to be a league that resets every three or four seasons.
