The iNHL has undergone many changes for the impending and upcoming 2015-2016 Season. We look at some of the iNHL's toughest teams and what we can expect to see this year. Ranking from last to first we kick off things with number 30!
#30 - Pittsburgh Penguins
Analysis: The Penguins go into the iNHL season ranked dead last in this category. Although Ian Cole and Matt Calvert can play a chippy game if needed they are not players that are skilled enough at dropping the gloves. GM Thomas Rehm is not only boosting two of the most popular iNHL stars to date but looks to be eliminating all but any unnecessary penalties forcing the Franchise to play an extremely disciplined approach to the upcoming season. This could spell a lot of trouble for teams forcing them to dress less aggressive players or retooling they're roster's when playing the Penguins. One thing is for sure, the Penguins will surly be looking to capitalize on any power plays that ensue throughout the iNHL campaign. The only noticeable player with any kind of ability to protect himself and his teammates looks to be a young seasoned 23 year old prospect Defenseman Reid McNeill who stands in at 6’4” 201 lbs. He may even be offered a chance to play with the parent club barring injury or simply impressing GM Rehm.
#29 – Detroit Red Wings
Analysis: The popular Detroit Red Wings will forever go down as one of the most toughest lineups the hockey world had seen in the midst of the rough and tumble 90’s which featured former legendary heavyweight enforcer Bob Probert and one of the most feared punchers in hockey at that time Joey Kocur. The Enforcer role all but flourished and gained momentum as teams looked above and beyond for the toughest, meanest players they could find to battle with their own artillery against opponents of the past. We fast forward to the year 2015, not only did the Red Wings set the standard on the way other teams recruited Enforcers in the past but the Red Wings over the years have now singly handedly changed the entire landscape of the way hockey is currently being played today and that’s all but eliminating the enforcer role entirely forcing the league into not only playing players that can fight but they must have skill as well.
Representing the Detroit Red Wings is GM Scott Smith, who ices a very similar lineup that of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Justin Abdelkader and Brendan Smith are the two players that will drop them gloves if needed but do not look for these guys to go out and seek any kind of fisticuffs as they are much better suited at playing they’re physical chippy game then being baited into dropping the gloves. Teams would be foolish to think the Detroit Red Wings will ever be goaded into feeding into and playing a nasty game as they are the master of beating any team where it counts the most and that’s capitalizing on every single power play advantage they can get and smearing the other teams pride all over the scoreboard in 60 mins.
#28 – Carolina Hurricanes
Analysis: Carolina Hurricanes GM Alex Sather boosts an organization with probably some of the most uncapped prospect potential in all of the league. But we’re ranking iNHL toughness not prospect’s so let’s move to number 28 of the iNHL toughest. As for mentioned along with the Penguins and Red Wings we have yet another similar franchise who brings the same resume to the table. Small and very speedy, the Hurricanes are not a team that plays a physical game but one that involves finesse skating and taking directions from former Stanley Cup Champion and current Hurricanes Captian Eric Staal. Brad Malone who is the only player on the roster who has a few fights to his record will be hard pressed on dropping the mitts with anyone and prefers to play his own checking style of game. In Charlotte the ‘Canes do have Carter Sandlak and Keegan Lowe to look to if they are ever in need of some size or muscle in they’re lineups. Both of these individuals are not too shy on protecting teammates and providing energy if need be. Look for the exact same of this Hurricane squad and that’s taking as many power play opportunities that are given to them while keeping themselves out of the limelight of killing of penalties.
#27 – Toronto Maple Leafs
Analysis: Toronto… the hub of all media and one of the most prolific teams to ever play some of the toughest guys to ever lace a pair of skates. Maple Leafs General Manager Nate Brennan has all but to look to Captain Dion Phaneuf who will be the lone gunslinger on a rather extremely soft Maple Leafs team that fans are not very accustomed of seeing at all. Although Phaneuf does better keeping his gloves on he is a heart and soul player who will think nothing but to drop the mitt’s if needed especially in aid of a teammate. Another individual within the organization that could break strides and very well could end up on the big club to offer Dion a hand when the going gets rough is youngster Sam Carrick who brings with him a feisty style of play. Not known as a fighter but always a team first guy he’ll offer more energy than anything, and you’ll find him occasionally dropping them with players especially when the game needs a spark.
#26 - Dallas Stars
Analysis: Dallas Stars General Manager Pichupal, is less concerned about which players are best suited for fighting on his team but more intrigued on having one of the league’s best agitators in Antoine Roussel. The big difference you ask is the fact Antoine can stick up for himself, and he’s also willing to come to the aid of his team mates when things get dirtier than a fox in a hen house. He's a player no one enjoys playing against but love to have him on your team. Not to mention he can play on any line, and has been noted as being relied on in playing in practically any situation as well. His value to the team cannot be measured. After Roussel we have assistant captain and Dallas’s star power forward Jamie Benn who knows how to take care of himself and he’s another player on a very underrated Stars team that will not think twice on sticking up for a teammate. We’re not done… we can also factor in big 6’2” 215 lbs forward Curtis McKenzie and you have some decent team toughness to go around. McKenzie is a willing combatant and is more than willing to give his team a lift in dropping them on occasion.
#25 - Minnesota Wild
Analysis: Looking down the roster of the Minnesota Wild, It looks as though GM Danny Smith doesn’t have much muscle for a team that spit out past pugilists such as Derek “Boogeyman” Boogaard (RIP), John Scott and Matt Kassian. However former Ducks and Devils veteran forward Ryan Carter brings not only endless determination and some leadership to his very small lineup but also adds some much needed energy to his fourth line. Carter while not known for his fighting ability is an individual who will give his all every shift just to stay in the lineup. He also isn’t prone to taking selfish or unneeded penalties either so you won’t find him putting his team in penalty killing situations too often. GM Danny Smith possess a unique situation squeezing out the Dallas Stars for a few reasons… one is journeyman Tyson Strachan who will be looked upon to be a regular call-up barring injuries and will add valuable energy.
The other reason here is enter 6’4” 215 lbs forward Kurtis “the Sledgehammer” Gabriel. That’s right… he earned that nickname very well throughout his days as an Owen Sound Attack player, and it wasn’t playing patty-cake! The Minnesota Wild team would definitely benefit from his presence and is expected to break into the Wild lineup at some point during the season as he’s proved he can be a very reliable player as well.
#24 - Nashville Predators
Analysis: Predators General Manager Dean Well’s posse’s little threat in the physicality department when playing tougher teams but that doesn’t mean the Predators are a lay down and take it team neither. Big Paul Gaustad doesn’t fight like he did when he entered the league what seems like ages ago but he also centered a line with some tough hombres in his day featuring the likes of Rob “Razor” Ray, Andrew Peters & Eric Boulton just to name a few. Due to concussion injuries sustained years prior, he is handcuffed on only dropping the mitts on very rare occasions, don’t be fooled though as he has learned from some of the games top pugilists on how to take care of himself. Now during the offseason the Predators signed Unrestricted Free Agent Barret Jackman adding some much needed bark on the blue line. Former St. Louis Blues longtime journeyman Jackman is no slouch to dropping the gloves and usually always is the first to get involved when the other teams start getting feisty. He’ll provide the gear oil to the chain driven sabre teeth when the tough get going.
Deep in the depths of that Sabre tooth cave dwells howls and growls from within. 6’5” 220lbs Jamie Devane is a well-known enforcer in the minors and is only a phone call away. His other partners in crime include another tough cookie in 6’0” 210lbs Cody Bass who also isn’t afraid to drop the gloves and mixing it up. There is one other player if needed 6’0 240lbs brickhouse Jonathan Diaby who relishes the role of protecting his players and adding energy any way he can create it. These players alone would catapult the Predators into one of the toughest teams in the iNHL bar they didn’t have the depth they have in other ways. With GM Well’s having so much skilled options in his organization, they’re really isn’t any room for Devane, Bass nor Diaby to be groomed into anything more than role players on the farm. But be warned, as they are there barring 11” teeth if Nashville ever decides it needs more Bite than Rawr!
#23 - Tampa Bay Lightning
Analysis: : Tampa Bay Lightning GM Justin Jackson made some noise earlier in preseason by acquiring one of the games top power forwards and also one of the game’s most ruthless fighters in Milan Lucic. The lightning were never known to play much of the physical game nor ever bothered to get into it with the fisticuffs as they’re too busy running up the scoreboard with an immensely talented lineup lead by superstar Steven Stamkos, but it’s not hard to believe with the recent acquisition of Lucic he’s more than capable of taking care of the entire team if need be. Though the presence of Milan Lucic alone doesn’t guarantee opponents won’t take liberties and cheap shots with any of the talented lighting players he isn’t just the lone gunslinger in Tampa town.
Checking forward Cedric Paquette isn’t a well-known fighter nor is he a player that seeks out the fisticuffs but he can be relied on when needed. Look for him to play a bigger game especially with the presence of Milan patrolling the lightning wings. If GM Jackson still believes he’ll need to add more zip to that zap 6’2” 230 lbs David Broll is not far off the depth charts baring injuries or simply looking for energy on his fourth line. 30 yr old Syracuse Journeyman Mike Angelidis who’s captained the Crunch for many years has looked after players for just about the same duration of his captaincy, is also available and happy to be used in case of depth purposes.
#22 - New Jersey Devils
Analysis: Devils GM Jon Bold ices one of the most defensively minded teams in all the iNHL. He’s also very smart on choosing specific players that don’t put him behind on the scoreboard with taking lazy and pointless penalties. With all this aside, it takes a certain individual and player mindset to keep a job in this tight and very puck protective group that which being Canadian native Jordin Tootoo. The Too-too train is known as one of the iNHL's best agitators and is able to distract other players to help his team win. Toot’s is also highly regarded as a feared fighter around the league and creates a lot of room for the Devils as well.
GM Jon Bold also has 6’4” 220lbs monster Ben Thomson at his disposal and is also breathing down the depth charts ready to make the commitment in becoming a regular in the iNHL. One of the Devils top prospects in Darnell Nurse who looks to be making the team out of camp this year is known to throw down and establish dominance on the blue line on occasion and will be surly looking to impress this year in keeping a spot. Nurse doesn’t have a problem coming to the aid of his teammates at any stretch of the game. Lastly newly acquired and former Chicago Blackhawks forward 6’4” 225lbs Bryan Bickell is another player that can also contribute in case the games get a little too chippy but don’t expect Bick’s to offer much in terms of seeking fisticuffs.
#21 - Arizona Coyotes
Analysis: Checking forward David Clarkson will add plenty of grit throughout the small Arizona Lineup. Clarkson who’s more popular for his “contract” provides much needed sandpaper and will not hesitate to aid a teammate in any circumstance. Helping the wily veteran is forward Kyle Chipchura, although not known as a fighter and will be playing a checking line utility role, he and Clarkson will have their work load cut out for the them should games turn that direction. Placing Arizona down to the 21st position for iNHl’s toughest teams doesn’t rest soly on Clarkson nor Chipchura but big 6’8” 260lbs John Scott who is recognized around the league as one of the strongest and most feared fighters still playing the one-dimensional enforcer role. Over the past few years big John has learned to help in other ways especially in San Jose where he found his niche in keeping his game strictly simple and will be looking forward into offering his 9th year of experience to the Coyotes organization. Some of the youngest and most exciting prospects are playing within the Coyotes system and you can be sure they will have all the room on the ice to strut they’re stuff with big John Scott just a shoulder tap away keeping other teams egos in check
#20 – Calgary Flames
Analysis: The Calgary Flames organization had one heck of a magical run last year with most of their players setting new career high totals. Upon the beginning of the off season the Flames were among the tops in team toughness and were feared to play with the likes of Deryk Engelland, Brandon Bollig and Michael Ferland patrolling the ice. GM Jason Gilmartin decided it was best to start building the team in a different direction and went out and acquired toughness via different methods. Entering the season the Flames look to former Boston Bruins defense-man Adam McQuaid who is no stranger to throwing down with anyone. Injuries have taken a toll on the big defense-man so time will tell if he can stay healthy long enough to contribute to the Flames hopeful success. Another player in particular is veteran Matt Hendricks of the Edmonton Oilers. It’s taboo for the Oilers and Flames to trade but they put their differences aside as GM Gilmartin aimed for a more skilled veteran who has no problem protecting the youngsters.
Young Ryan Hartman is another player in the organization, Hartman plays a feisty style of game and will be playing with something to prove, as he was overlooked on the Blackhawks. He will be playing in the same division which means Hartman will be looking at any and all opportunities to stick it to his former team. The Calgary Flames have a few twin towers in Stockton who are being looked upon to add depth down the road and quite even possibly find themselves being called up during the season, one half of the tower is forward 6’6” 210lbs Hunter Smith, who will not hesitate to prove himself and stick up for his team, the other being 6’7” 245 lbs Keegan Kanzig. Goliath and face smasher Kanzig was known as a feared fighter in his junior days in the "dub" . Both carry with them the ability to intimidate and will strengthen the team dramatically once the Flames feel they are ready to make that step, perhaps even floating them down the list to one of the toughest again and mentioned with the likes of a Anaheim, St, Louis or a Philadelphia team.
#19 - Montreal Canadiens
Analysis: Montreal Canadiens GM Wally who leads the Bleu blanc et rouge is all about team toughness. It all starts with gritty veteran Dale Wiese who started his career picking fights and though mostly losing more times than winning, still provides the Canadiens with a boost of energy every now and then. Weise has now revitalized his career as more of a two-way player and is now regarded as one of Montreal’s better players leaving the most of the fisticuffs to former Vancouver Canuck Zack Kassian and 6’7” 225 lbs prospect goliath Jarred Tinordi. Both Kassian and Tinordi are more than capable of keeping order in the Montreal lineup and with another gigantic forward in 6’4 225lbs Connor Crisp on the cusp of adding to their depth, they do not look to be in bad shape if any teams try taking liberties against star players Subban and feisty Gallagher.
#18 – Florida Panthers
Analysis: GM Steve Donaldson possess more than a few big cats on his squad of panthers, one being 6’5” 210 lbs Eric Gudbranson and the other is former Winnipeg Jet grinder and enforcer 6’3” 235lbs Chirs Thorburn. This isn’t even his the Alpha male! In a lineup that boosts some of the iNHL largest men in the game they went out and acquired Former Jets player… Meet Alpha-male panther cat 6’5” 260lbs Dustin Byfuglien. Although big buff isn’t considered a player that fights often he will stand his ground and has no problem beating up his opponents who dare to tangle with the big guy. Most of the workload will be on Thorburn and Gudbranson in the fisticuffs department as both players won’t tolerate any extra nonsense beyond the whistle nor any hacking or slashing in front of their star netminder Roberto Luongo. Panther’s prospect and future star Lawson Crouse is still growing into his 6’4” 215lbs frame and although he is still a year away from being considered as a regular he isn’t shy on dropping the mitts either, making this team one of the biggest and also one of the most formidable opponents in the league.
#17 – New York Rangers
Analysis: GM Tom Ward’s squad isn’t the toughest lineup in the league in any means but they know how to take care of themselves pending the situation gets chippy out there. Tanner Glass is considered a middle weight and does a good job at that. He isn’t the type of player to go looking for altercations as he’s more focused on staying within the lineup and offering protection when the time beckons. You’ll see him banging and crashing the boards and getting in the opponents face to keep the game interesting. 6’5” 230 lbs Blue-line prospect Dylan McIIrath who went 10th overall in the 2010 iNHL draft has matured into not only a Dave Manson prototype but offers toughness that is very rare for today’s iNHL standards. He’s not shy on dropping the gloves with anyone and not only is he considered a favorite to becoming a top heavyweight in the league in given time, he could very well end up being one of the top defensive defenceman as well if given the chance to develop. If you also factor in 6’3” 230 lbs power forward Chris Kreider who can take care of himself you have a pretty good bunch of individuals who can help play peacemakers if the game decides to go in the nasty department.
#16 – Colorado Avalanche
Analysis: Avalanche GM Scott man’s one of the more “unique” teams in the iNHL as he boosts one of the most active fighters in today’s game. Meet the “not” so ginger kid 6’2”lbs 210 lbs Cody McLeod. Cody is what you’d call a player that will not only fight anyone at any time, but he’d even fight his own momma to prove he belongs in the lineup. Do gingers really have no souls? I’ll leave that discretion to all of you! McLeod led the league in fights last year and was also in the top 8 in the year previously. He also has some pretty soft hands reaching 12 pts – 13pts and can play on virtually any line if needed as he’s even been used sparingly on the third line for long stretches of the past seasons. However slotting Colorado to the #16th positon does not base itself just on McLeod but the Ave’s have on reserve one of the top three fighters in the iNHL being that of 6’6” 225 lbs Patrick “Bordy” Bordeleau.
Bordeleau was re-signed to a contract a year ago, as he managed to impress the entire organization by not only going undefeated and beating some of the games top heavyweights but he’s defensively sound and is responsible to play regular minutes. Going down with an long term knee injury has really put a kink in his iNHL career as he now finds himself playing on the farm, but be sure GM Scott will be calling finding he needs some muscle in his talent lineup.
#15- San Jose Sharks
Analysis: GM George Shattuck could be one of the toughest teams in the iNHL if he wanted too go that direction but with the depth they have in the organization, he finds himself in the same bracket as Nashville. On his roster and currently slotted into the season as a regular forward is 5”11 205 lbs Mako shark Mike Brown. Veteran Mike has the duty of keeping all of the other teams in check, this might sound like an incredible task but don’t underestimate a determined Brownie one bit. He may lose more fights than he finds himself winning but the truth is he’ll always be out there stirring the pot on every shift, creating energy when he can and Brownie will never, ever take a night off... you can bank on that!. Helping Brown to maintain order is former Dallas Star Brendan Dillon, Dillon isn’t a guy that will seek fights but will be there to drop the gloves when opponents decide to get disrespectful.
GM George does have some other “big fish” in the pond so don’t believe for yourself one minute that his team doesn’t measure up to the #15 ranking!, San Jose Barracuda currently ices former Maple Leaf and former San Jose Shark Frazer McLaren. McLaren gained his fame by dropping other heavies on the formidable lineup featuring Colton Orr only a few seasons ago with the Maple Leafs. Another player on standby should San Jose need be looking to add some muscle, is Michael Haley who possess a mean left hook and is feared around the league of hitting like a truck! The message here folks is if you choose to add blood to the water, you’ll find yourself being devoured in a feeding frenzy!
#14 – Boston Bruins
Analysis: The Boston Bruins made an extensive amount of changes to they’re lineups this offseason but still possess a few mean “bears” should you mess around with they’re developing of they’re cubs. These bruins are not the biggest bears in the group nor the league but they are vicious and could very well lead the iNHL in fights because... they’re that mean! We have here the “R&R” line of notorious bad boy Zac Rinaldo and newcomer Tyler Randell. Don’t be fooled into underrating these two “S$^T” disturbers. Boston falls into the #14 slot for just these two guys alone as Rinaldo running away for most of the ranking. Zac is known more for his ability to draw penalties, create an obscene amount of energy for his team and cause the most disturbance anyone has seen since the days of Sean Avery, in the process he takes some of the most “needless” penalties and frustrates coaches into benching him on occasion, but being such a valuable asset in this sense he usually always finds himself playing a regular shift afterwards. Tyler Randell is a player with something to prove, he will be riding shotgun to Rinaldo and will very much be engaged in fighting and trying to cause just as much controversy when teams play Boston. Be warned, do not “feed” or go near the bears!
#13- NY Islanders
Analysis: The Islanders are not known for their fisticuffs but they are more than capable of handling any situations thrown at them. Speaking of thrown, they have led the iNHL in hitting for what seems like a long time now. Leading the charge are human wrecking balls Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck. There’s no one that isn’t laying face first on the ice when these two are finished they’re shift. However, Matt Martin is the Islanders hitman, and when he’s not trying to put you thru the glass he’ll be looking to drop the gloves to create even more energy. Look for Martin to be leading the Islanders by a mile in majors this season. He’s an invaluable asset to the Islanders lineup and has proven to be valuable in his career on Long island. Scott Mayfield and Travis Hamonic will provide backup to Martin when the games turns sour. Both players and the organization are not known to be the scrapping type but as mentioned previously they have players who can certainly take care of they’re own.
#12 - Ottawa Senators
Analysis: The Ottawa Senators are a team led by an “old school” mentality but an “new age” enforcer. Veteran Chris Neil is the most decorated and most widely respected player in all of the iNHL. Neil paved the way to teams vouching to find players that not only can fight but play the game as well. Neil who broke into the league during the 2001-2002 season has fought his way into the record books by going to war with some of the top pugilists to ever lace skates. Such players as Tie Domi, Donald Brashear, Derek Boogaard, Chris Simon, Colton Orr, Peter Worrell the list goes on. Neil who is in the twilight of his career and on his last year of his contract with the Senators offers an enormous amount of experience and was even looked upon as the an captain but settled with the much deserved “A”. Don’t let his age fool anyone and although he has lost a few of his steps with age you will still see him winning most of his fights as usual. He’ll go down as one of the greats in this category and the game will truly miss his style of play! Look for Neil to close out his career with the Senators this season or be traded sometime during the season to a cup contender for the playoff push as his experience and shear grit alone will make any team tougher come playoffs. Backing the veteran warrior is another tough nut in Mark Borowiecki who will just about fight anyone who tries to take liberties to the Senator players. Trained by Neil himself in the art of pugilistic’s, look for “Boro-cop” to lead the iNHL or become amongst it’s top fighting major go getters. On the farm and about to break into the league very soon is young depth forward Travis Ewanyk who has played the enforcer role for quite some-time but offers more than that, he will be relied on to man the fourth line down the road. He is no slouch to dropping the gloves which puts Ottawa deep into the #12 category this year.
#11 - Buffalo Sabres
Analysis: The Buffalo Sabres in the past were a team that a lot of teams hated playing against. The likes of Matthew Barnaby, Rob Ray, Brad May, Bob Boughner , Eric Boulton & Andrew Peters were just some of the toughest players Buffalo had the pleasure of having come thru the system. We enter 2015, with number two pick of last year’s draft Jack Echel looking to develop you can be sure even in a time when the league has done away with a lot of the pugilistic’s the team still boasts some serious team toughness from within. Leading the charge and taking on most of the heavy lifting so to speak is veteran and a very underrated Cody McCormick. Don’t look for him to be active in seeking out fights as he’s better suited showing up afterwards or breaking your nose if your on the ice at the same time of the theatrics. Helping out in this area is 6’3 225 lbs Marcus Foligno who plays more of a power forward game but is still a willing combatant and will aid his teammates and help in this area with no hesitation. You can chalk in Mike Weber who again fits the same bill as he has absolutely no problem dropping the gloves if needed. Finally we have Nicolas Deslauriers, who has earned his spot within the organization aiding his teammates when needed and claimed his fame to the iNHL by smashing skulls with his fists in years past. In the system and sniffing at the buffalo rump looking to break into the lineup is 6’4” 2015 lbs Justine Kea. Kea who plays the role of enforcer for the Rochester Americans will add much needed depth and toughness should the Sabres need some extra artillery to they’re arsenal of youth.
#10- Vancouver Canucks
Analysis: The Vancouver Canucks… yes... once the most hated team in the iNHL and currently still is to some folks, is also home to one of the biggest pests in Alex Burrows but will be fortunate to have a few shadows looking over him this year. Derek Dorsett isn’t the biggest orca on the team but certainly one of the most fearless players in the league in going toe to toe with just about anyone. He is a little ball of hate… literally. Already projected to lead the league in penalty majors and penalty totals by years end, Dorsett dons more intensity than you can shake a stick at! He’s mad…. All the time. On his shift he’s mad, when he calls out for the puck he’s mad, when he skates he’s mad, during interviews he’s mad… His intensity cannot be matched by anyone making him a very unique player and extremely tough to play against. Helping Dorsett in keeping the peace is another fighting major leader in Brandon Prust. Brandon who is well travelled was traded by the Hab’s earlier this postseason as his personal life and actively taken part in a player’s wives television series eventually leaked onto the team causing more drama then a housewives of Vancouver episode!
All drama aside, he is still a player that has no intentions of letting any player around the league have they’re way on taking liberties to any of his teammates. Prust can also take a regular shift and has even been known to be thrown on the scoring lines on occasion. Look for these two prolific penalty major magnets to keep things energetic and very interesting in Vancouver. One player to keep in mind and literally shoots the Canucks down to the top ten is underrated and very tough 6’4” 210 lbs Andrei Pedan. Pedan who is a feared fighter in the minors is still developing and can be considered for a call up as he’s certainly reliable in his own end and could very well be a mainstay in the very near future on the Vancouver blue-line.
#9 – Winnipeg Jets
Analysis: Jet’s GM Dax Kopp made some noise around the league earlier in the preseason by sending big buff packing to Florida then making another trade in sending heavyweight fighter Anthony Peluso to Chicago. Now down by two heavyweights one being a true fighter the other a 260 lbs bull moose, Gm Kopp replaced the two players with some other well- known penalty minutemen. Rounding out the first of his top gun fighter pilots is veteran tough guy and former Stanley Cup Anaheim Duck Shawn Thornton, who now is in the twilight of his career, not only served as the Bruins tough guy for years but is still very well-seasoned on taking on all comers and adds experience as that of Chris Neil in Ottawa. He isn’t the lone Jet in his squad as one of his wingmen is another veteran and also a Stanley cup recipient Andrew Desjardins, not known to win too many fights, former Shark and Hawk veteran Desjardins is a willing combatant and as gritty as they come when things get chippy. He also played a large role in the Hawks winning the cup in last year’s playoffs playing on a line with Andrew Shaw and Marcus Kruger in creating and maintaining one of the best checking line / shutdown units in the playoffs. Both Thornton and Desjardins offer more than anyone would think and they’re record to date proves it.
Complementing the duo fighter Jets is young feisty forward J.C Lipon who will not think twice on dropping the gloves to prove he belongs on the team. You think this squad needs more wingman ? You bet! On the blue-line and flanking the afterburners we have yet another veteran who knows what it takes to win and is more than happy to protect when the time calls for it in 6’2” 215lbs Mark Stuart. Want to add one more to the fleet of these high flyers ? You can factor in another young player in Patrice Cormier, although he isn’t known as a fighter but his game is feisty and will do what needs to be done to maintain a place in this very tight lineup.
#8 – LA Kings
Analysis: Former 2012 & 2014 Stanley Cup Champions the Los Angeles Kings boast one of the biggest lineups next to the Florida Panthers and certainly pose no problems in intimidating or playing into a scrap heaved game. The Kings are known more for being team tough and finishing all they’re checks. They have several players in particular who play a physical style of game and most teams would be wise not to bother bringing a knife to a gunfight. The LA Kings are one of the league’s most physical teams and have more than a few players who are can drop the gloves when needed as It starts with Kyle Clifford. Kyle broke into the league in 2010 and can also chip in offensively when needed. He’s been assigned checking role duties for most of his career and is known to play on the scoring line on occasion. He’s a jack of all trades and immensely valued throughout the Kings brass but he’s not alone in serving to aid his teammates in creating energy or dropping the mitts. Another particular player is Andy Andreoff, who is in his first season as a LA King and will serve the center position for most if not all the season. He’s a very scrappy individual and being his first year to impress the big wigs specifically GM Jeff you can be sure he’ll have his hands in everything. 6’3” 230lbs Jordan Nolan is another physical specimen as although he’s more of a dish it out and can take it back individual he loves to play the game extremely physical and will think nothing to protect his fellow teammates when called upon. 6’3” 210lbs Scott Sabourin currently playing for the Ontario Reign is on the verge of breaking into the iNHL at some point bringing his physical style of play with him, although he is currently serving as the Enforcer for the LA Kings farm team you can be sure the Kings are not worried about games getting heated.
#7 – Washington Capitals
Analysis: GM Jason Gilmartin and the Washington Capitals have not only the most skilled players in the world throughout they’re lineup led by Russian mega-star Alex Ovechkin but they also have numerous untapped prospects who are potentially looking to break into the league as well. With all this aside they also like to make sure these players are protected at all costs! Although they have a handful of players that can take care of themselves including Ovechkin himself, the focus is on 6’4” 210 lbs Tom Wilson who has lead the Cap’s with fighting majors over the last few years and also possess some pretty good hands for a big guy. He’s a player that takes it upon himself to do all the heavy lifting and loves to park his large frame in the faces of opponent’s goaltenders as well. Look for Wilson to develop slowly into the projected power forward they are looking for and eventually handing the fighting duties to his good pal Michael Latta. 6’1” 215lbs Latta isn’t the biggest player but he’s built like a pitbull. Insanely strong and physically able to handle most of the leagues pugilists he’ll be looked upon to take the load off of Wilson this year. They also have another player that can fully take on all responsibilities and brings with him an immense amount of defensive forward depth in Zach Sill. Just this fourth line alone carry’s them into the 7th ranking as you can be sure the Capitals are in good hands with these individuals taking care of the “Capital Investment”
#6 – Columbus Blue Jackets
Analysis: GM Michael “don’t call me Myers” Mayer III is no “Halloween” prop. His BlueJackets team is physically imposing and boast nothing but grit and determination throughout his lineup. With over half of the team fully capable of taking care of themselves and teammates we’ll focus on the few individual’s whos shoulders the task belongs too. Veteran, longtime Jacket & top heavyweight Jared Boll is widely respected around the league. He’s fought all the top heavies throughout his 8 years of iNHL service and has proved to the entire organization and the league he’s been able to keep his job this long as he’s the heart and soul of this Bluejackets team to some fans. Boll will protect his teammates, and will seek whatever needs to be done to energize his team into helping his teammates get the “W” for his team come games end. The veteran warrior is not alone in glove chucking… 6’3” 225lbs Dalton Prout will provide the blue line cannon artillery when called upon. Prout who is no slouch beat Lucic in a two part fight series last season with Lucic reclaiming his pride in the second bout, leaving people to believe Dalton could very well be a top fighter in the league. Penalty minute magnet and feisty forward Steve Downie will be on standby to tackle whomever he can as well. Although Downie is better classified as another of the league’s top shift disturbers you can bet he’ll have his hands in everything he can. Former Boston Bruin grinder Gregory Campbell is another Jacket who is known to drop them to energize his team, even though he has the worst win-loss record in the league he’s perfectly capable of showing up in need. A wise man once said it’s not what you do, but it’s how you do it.
#5 – Chicago Blackhawks
Analysis: Gm Ranek added a considerable amount of toughness during the preseason bringing in the likes of veteran former Flame and Stanley Cup Penguin Deryk Engelland. “Engo” has taken on all comers in the league and has won more than his fare share of fights over his career. The 33yr old journeyman who was considered a top heavyweight himself only a few seasons ago by K.O’ing Colton Orr is not only capable of playing regular minutes but is very responsible in his own end and will be looking out for the Blackhawks top stars should teams decide to take liberties. Helping the capable veteran in playing sheriff is one of the top heavyweights of the league former Winnipeg player Anthony Peluso. The 6’4” 236lbs forward had established himself in Winnipeg as not only a top fighter in the league but was used as a checking role forming a successful shutdown unit with Chris Thorburn. Peluso has proved he can play a valuable role on the fourth line and could very well even be promoted on occasion as he’s developed unexpectedly into a pretty responsible player. Other notables that have no problem dropping the gloves and offering a spark to the team is former Calgary Flame and freight train Michael Ferland. Fergy will go down in the history books as single handily destroying the Canucks players during the 2014-2015 playoffs and the highly publicized war he had with former Canuck Kevin Bieksa. Longtime Buffalo Sabre and shift disturber Patrick Kaleta who just signed a contract a few days ago will provide even more closure to a team looking to intimidate this season. Kaleta is more known to create havoc and draw penalties but don’t be fooled by his fighting ability as he’s been well documented in throwing them very well. Veteran Defense-man Jay Harrison will be slated as a player who will rotate in and out of the lineup though-out the season will also be available in keeping his eyes out on aiding his teammates.
#4 – Edmonton Oilers
Analysis: Oilers GM Pulse man’s one of the most exciting teams in the league but possesses one of the most challenging teams at that. Posing as the Oilers lone gunslinger for a few seasons now, Luke Gazdic is regarded as the top heavyweight in the league. Possessing a knockout punch and watching over the young asset’s for a few seasons now, they’re hasn’t been many teams looking to take liberties when the big winger has been slotted into the lineup. Developed mainly in the Dallas Stars organization he was plucked off waivers as the Oilers were just looking for someone to help in the size department. What they didn’t know was “Gaz” would develop into a mainstay and become one of they’re better fourth line defensive forwards. Popular throughout the city of Champions, Gazdic has deserved all the hard work and sacrifices made and you can be sure he’ll remain on top of the food chain for a little while yet. Helping Gazdic to elevate some of the fisticuff workload is another heavyweight in former Stanley cup champ and Calgary Flame Brandon Bollig. Bollig knows his role well and is also a feared tough guy around the league. These two players alone will almost guarantee no liberties are ever to be taken from opposing teams. Deep within the system and looking to break out is up and coming 6’2” 220lbs Mitch Moroz and another player who drops the gloves often 6’3” 215lbs Kale Kessy. The Oilers have nothing but protection throughout the franchise and is looking to be in excellent shape down the road as well.
#3 - St. Louis Blues
Analysis: The St. Louis Blues pose immense talent throughout they're organization and play a very physical brand of hockey. One of the heaviest teams in the iNHL and also one of the most physical, they are built to wear down and punish they're opponents into eventually coughing up mistakes after mistakes. Led by Heavyweight forward 6'2" 230lbs Ryan Reaves, he is considered by some one of the top heavyweights in the league and to some players "thee" top heavyweight in the league. The niche on Ryan is he's been known to be a spot picker, thus offering up the challenges to other players who have been on the ice considerably longer than he has, or going after players that are not in his weight class. Needless to say he has proven thru the course of his career he can fight and win against all comers and provides the Blues some pretty good hockey hands as well. Providing the backup to Reaves is former Pittsburgh Penguin 6'4 215lbs Robert Bortuzzo. Using his large frame, Bortuzzo will not think twice on clearing the crease and providing his blue line with a physical presence which is becoming very rare in todays game. Another player who has gained popularity thru his career is one of the top agitators in the league, veteran Steve Ott. He isn't shy on providing or creating the theatrics for his team to help win hockey games and isn't shy on dropping the gloves if needed either. Complementing all of these Blues players are Joel Edmondsun, Kyle Brodziak, Troy Brouwer and Captain David Backes, who is considered an old school power forward is also one of the most underrated players in the league.
#2 - Philadelphia Flyers
Analysis: General Manager Bjorn Thelin doesn't quite have a designated "heavyweight" so to speak but do NOT let that fool you. These guys are team tough! Mimicking a new style "Broad Street Bullies" brand, they will bully you and wear you down to even giving them your last gatorade bottle. The team has players that can not only stick up for themselves, but drive you straight thru the boards as well. Leading the charge is power forward Wayne Simmonds. Simmonds is a rarity in the game as he is what you'd call an old school power forward and is that of David Backes in St. Louis. I don't have to mention he has the capabilities of handling just about anyone in the league if needed. With a blockbuster that sent prospects going the other way, the Flyers acquired the biggest and strongest man in the iNHL in former Bruin captain and Stanley Cup defenseman Zdeno Chara. Chara is another player that I think we do not need to take much interest in explaining as he is more than capable of handing anyone at anytime if needed. Lets just say the list of players and the amount of team toughness is regarded as the most in the iNHL and features Bobby Farnham, Radko Gudas, Luke Schenn, Brandon Manning, Kevin Miller, Ryan White... The Flyers hold true to the number 2 ranking.
#1 - Anaheim Ducks
Analysis: GM Fredrick Hagerstrand doesn't need to worry about the pugilistic's or especially his players being pushed around. The team is built as one of the most physically imposing hurt you and let us win mentality. Led by wing commander Ryan Getzlaf and his wingman Corey Perry, the team is physically superior to the rest of the iNHL period. Why exactly does the Ducks take the number one spot ? Well, Its starts with the Heavyweight Champion Brian McGrattan. Big Ern has overcame a lot in his career now being sober for a handful of years and finding himself he's retooled his game and although used very rarely in games he is fully capable of playing in the most physical games if needed. Over the last few seasons, Gratt's has lost his opponents will to fight him both eliminating his role as enforcer and designated tough guy and leading to his demotion to the minor league affiliates where he now resides helping protect and offering valuable experience to the developing Ducks. He is nothing more than a phone call away should GM Hagerstrand need his services but the team offers alot more than Mcgrattan at the moment. Tim Jackman is another player who has been in the league for years now. He has learned how to play a simple game thus being relied on at times to take on regular responsibility on the fourth line when called upon. Clayton Stoner, Kevin Bieksa, Patrick Maroon, Chris Stewart, Simon Despres, Josh "Charlie" Manson who in fact is the son of former legendary tough guy Dave Manson's are all individuals who would relish any opportunity to air out they're hands by dropping they're gloves when needed.
