San Jose Sharks 2024-2025 Season Preview
The Sharks ended the season at 80 points, well out of the playoffs for a 2nd straight year which was not a surprise to many in the Bay Area. Heading into this off-season, it was clear that the Sharks needed help through out the entire roster.
Scoring was very much by committee the previous season, as Ryan Murray lead the team with 56 points and Rizvan Mansurov in goals at 24.
Defensively, the team was relatively solid with Ryan Murray and Travis Sanheim seeing most of the minutes.
In goal, Brandon Halvorsen was steady as the teams starter after coming over as a UFA posting a .913 save percentage and a 2.84 GAA in 63 games.
The Sharks have made significant changes to the line-up in hopes of making it back to the playoffs, a line up full of veterans and buy-low projects.
Projected Line-up:
Forwards:
Palmieri-Rasanen-Ho-Sang
Herzog-Kaplan-Mansurov
Crone-Persson-Senyshyn
Lapin-Sicoly-Guest
Extra: Rowan
Defence:
Murray-Sanheim
Clague-Zborovsky
Saros-Boqvist
Zelenak
Goaltenders:
Halvorsen
Harvey
Goaltending:
Brandon Halvorsen proved to be a capable starter for the Sharks last season and with Louis-Phillipe Guindon departing as a UFA, Halvorsen will be the undisputed starter this season.
Samuel Harvey coming over from the KHL is an unknown commodity but he will most likely be Halvorsen’s backup and be looking to prove he has a place in the iNHL.
Defence:
The defence remains largely intact from the previous season with one change being Kale Clague coming over from Arizona as a UFA, he appears to be on the 2nd pair with the ever reliable shot blocking machine, Sergei Zborovsky. Murray and Sanheim will look to build on last season as the Sharks top pair to start.
Hard hitting Christian Jaros and PP specialist Adam Boqvist will be back together on the bottom pair looking to secure more minutes. While Vojetech Zelenak will get an opportunity to fill in as the 7th defenceman. Not a spectacular blue line, however it should be a capable one for the Sharks.
Forwards:
The significant changes for the Sharks were up front, with the Sharks acquiring Josh Ho-Sang and signing him to a massive 7 year, $66.5m contract, he will be looked upon to drive the Sharks offence. Palmeiri and Herzog will be looking to prove they can stay healthy and contribute. Devin Kaplan had a decent rookie year and will have the opportunity to improve on his 36 point rookie campaign, paired with Rizvan Mansurov that may happen. Zach Senyshyn appears to be the odd man out of the top 6, projected to be with Hank Crone and Noak Persson, a line which should be responsible defensively while able to chip in some offence. The 4th line looks to be one that will be a wild card with Eric Guest getting a shot with Lapin and Sicoly, they will be an unknown for the Sharks and will most likely be limited in what they provide.
Outlook for 2024-25
The Sharks are hoping the buy-low strategy will pay off with Palmieri and Herzog being able to return to form/ stay healthy while Ho-Sang will need to live up to that large contract and produce for the Sharks to have a chance at making it back to the post season. This roster appears to be the one GM Kurtz is going to be tied to for a few seasons, so for his sake it better work out.
