MONTREAL- A pair of young stars were introduced to the media today as they got their first look at the pressure cooker that is Montreal.
" Today has been a pretty crazy day" exclaimed Bobby Ryan, who had just arrived early Saturday morning from Vancouver. " I don't really have a whole lot of words right now. I'm very grateful to be here and to have an opportunity to be a part of this team. Obviously there was always an energy when you come and play here, Montreal is a special team with a lot of history, and I'm going to do what I can to help our team win". When asked about his recent struggles with Vancouver, Ryan was quick to downplay. " I enjoyed my time in Vancouver, though it was short. I don't think I had really found my role with the Canucks, but that kind of stuff develops over time. The guys were great, I meshed fairly well with the coaches and staff, but now I'm ready to turn the page and look forward to my time here with Montreal". Ryan has has 10 goals and 10 assists in his 28 games this season and is a minus 4.
Jordan Eberle was in equally high spirits talking about the move. " It's pretty hard to believe this is all going on right now. I was surprised when Paul called me up and told me I was being moved. I've always lived in the prairies, so that was a bit hard to deal with at first, but that's the business. Montreal has a really great team this year so I'm excited to meet all the guys and get out on the ice." Eberle was then asked if he had much time to speak with Ryan since arriving in Montreal. " No not really, just small talk, its been pretty hectic. When I heard about the trade I sent him a text, and obviously I'm glad we're coming in at the same time. I'm sure once the hype drops down a little we'll be able to catch up a bit more, but we're in the fishbowl, today is Day 1, and I can't say I'm surprised we haven't had the opportunity yet today". Eberle has 6 goals and 8 assists in 16 games and is a plus 2.
Earlier General Manager Matt Gough had taken to the podium and announced his two newest acquisitions. " Today is a big day for the city of Montreal, for our club, and for our fans. We've been fortunate enough to bring in two all star talents in Bobby Ryan and Jordan Eberle. After the first 10 games of the season our scoring began to take a bit of a dip, our losses started to mount and it became very clear to me that we needed to make a move. My first intention was to inquire about Bobby, because I've always enjoyed his style of play, and I don't care what Brian Burke says, this young man has character. Once I got on the phones with Kurt Schulze, we were able to set a base for our trade, and after a couple of weeks we hammered out the details to get this done. Coming on those last few days of negotiations I also spoke with new GM Paul Pearson, welcomed him to the league, and dropped a feeler about Jordan, as I'd noticed he'd been put on the trade block. Things moved fairly quickly from there and Paul and I exchanged thoughts on what we were looking for out of the deal. Paul was willing to accept some salary from our end along with the picks, and that really helped to push this deal through. He's a new GM but he has a great plan in place for his team, and he's committed to the rebuild. Oiler fans should be very excited to have him".
Gough went on to say, " I want to say thank you to Alexei Emelin , Devante Smith-Pelley and Tom Gilbert. These gentleman were professional day in/day out and will be missed from our club. Its the tough thing about this business, you get to know these guys, their families. It's never easy saying goodbye, but I wish them all the best and I know they will continue to be professionals and achieve great success in this league. I also want to give my wishes to prospect Nikita Scherbak who is off to Vancouver. This kid has some real skill, hes going to be a very special player, and it wasn't easy for me to pull the trigger on that trade. But we have a window in front of us to win, and with our salary obligations it needs to be sooner rather than later. So Nikita, don't make a fool of me now, sometimes you don't have to shoot for the stars, being average is perfectly okay "
When asked about when the new players will draw into the lineup, Gough responded , " That's up to Michel. But I assume Ryan will be in tonight against the Bruins, and that we will work Jordan in early into next week"
