RANGERS CONCERNED ABOUT LEVEL OF PLAY
Although the New York Rangers are vying for second place as April approaches, word is the front office is concerned about the team's play, something owner James Dolan has reportedly shared with General Manager Mike Best in emails the last couple months. After a 13-2 start, the Rangers have just managed to keep their heads above water since at 29-23-6. With the playoffs looming the wonder is if they can rekindle the groove that was there at the start of the season. One thing the team would like to see is Daniel Bernhardt getting back into the mix. Bernhardt had 13 points, including 8 goals, in the first 15 games as the Rangers were leading the league averaging over four goals a game. But after signing a two-year extension, Bernhardt went 18 games without putting the puck in net. According to one source, coaches were annoyed that the 23-year old walked around the locker room as if he had a smiley face pasted on his head.
"He just looked too happy after signing that deal despite his play dropping off," the source said.
With Nikolaj Ehlers now a top six guy and firmly entrenched on the second line in Bernhardt's old spot, the Rangers have struggled to find a line that Bernhardt, who tallied 58 points last year, gels with. After the season-ending injury to Zemgus Girgensons, Bernhardt eventually returned to the second line and is showing signs he might be coming out of his funk with five points in the last six games. However, his game ratings too often are in the 50s and the line has been allowing more goals than it has scored the last two weeks.
The other concern has been the play of the blue line, particularly the high number of turnovers. Newcomer Martin Marincin seemed to slip all too well into Coach Lindy Ruff's style, committing nine of his own so far. Ruff held a team meeting this week to change tactics. The inside source says Ruff hadn't worried about the matter when the Rangers were winning consistently but now it needs to be addressed with the playoffs looming.
In the meantime, rookie Devante Stephens has looked confused on the ice, posting GRs in the 40s about half the time. When asked recently about Stephens, Best said, "He just needs ice time. The kid showed improvement every year he was in the WHL and the AHL and we expect he will be an indispensable part of this team soon."
There are also reports of some front office turmoil involving scouts claiming 25-year old Brady Skjei has been developing bad habits on the ice, and that his skills have declined. Best apparently questioned the abilities of his scouting staff while Lindy has continued to play Skjei, who by all statistical evaluations has been very solid this year, his numbers improving from last season.
Winger Jacob de la Rose, claimed off waivers, has also struggled to fit into the squad through his first seven games although the source stated, "Defense in the bottom six has not been the problem recently. They've actually been pretty stout."
"But he isn't Girgensons," he added.
The Rangers best hope come playoff time might be the oldest one for an underdog to be a contender - a hot goalie. Michael Hutchinson is just three wins from tying the Rangers record for victories in a season (42). With Hutchinson in net for all playoff games, the team won't have to worry about backup goalies, who have gone 3-8-2.

Word out of Seattle is that they're trying to get some of their players on expiring deals re-signed for the start of the season to diminish distractions. Surely Honka must be at the top of that list, but I'm hearing his initial ask is high. Like really high.

Breaking news out of Seattle: Last year's runner up for the Orr trophy, Julius Honka, has re-signed with his team for another 6 years avoiding free agency. The exact financial details of the deal are still unknown, but it's thought to be somewhere around a $9 million average annual value. And word is, there are plenty more re-signings to come out of Seattle.
