These rules are not currently in use!
Some contracts signed by RFAs during this season's Free Agency have been deemed unrealistic and potentially harmful to the competitive balance of the League. As a result, the Exec Board and Contract Review Board have decided that the process for handling RFAs needs to change.
Three options have been discussed, outlined below. Since this is a significant change, all League GMs have been asked to review and vote on their preferred approach. Please cast your vote by Saturday, August 7th at 08.00pm Eastern.
At this time there will be no modifications to below, and no additional options will be introduced. If we find that things do not run as intended we might change things again in the future, but for now the below options are what is on the table.
Option A
- At the start of FA, all players who go to RFA would use the CRB extension offer from earlier in the season as their contract ask. If the GM did not reach out, the CRB determines the value on their own and GMs need to ask before submitting an offer to this RFA
Ex. Joe Smith: CRB offer 4.0m/4y - this would be his asking price as an RFA
- At the start of Free Agency, the CRB would release a full list of player demands for all RFAs for GMs to use as a reference.
- All offers to RFAs must have an AAV of no less than 85% of the CRB offer.
Ex. Joe Smith's 4.0m AAV CRB ask would need to be met with at least a 3.4m AAV offer
- Term on RFAs can be shortened but not lengthened from the CRB ask with the longest term
Valid offer ex. Joe Smith: 3.4m/4y (Ask 4.0m/4y)
- Offers to RFAs must be submitted both in game and to the relevant CRB rep for approval
- The player must agree to the offered AAV in-game. This maintains the risk of letting players going to RFA in case their demands go up. Term doesn't matter and would be amended in case it exceeds the CRB ask with the longest term
- GM must accept any amendments
- This proposal would apply retroactively from July 1, 2029
Option B
- Amendments would be applied through shortening contracts to the year the player is set to become UFA. AAVs will be left unchanged
Ex. Calum Ritchie - 3.535m/7y would be shortened to 3.535m/2y
- Amendments would be voted in the CRB on 3/4 basis during the FA sims
- GM must accept any amendments
- This proposal would apply retroactively from July 1, 2029
Option C
- Restricted Free Agents would not exist - all Free Agents are unrestricted and can be bid on freely, without compensation
- This proposal would apply from January 1, 2030 and whichever of Options A/B that gets the most votes will apply to the 2029 RFA crop.
