iEdmonton Oilers Official Press Release
June 22, 2016 Edmonton, Alberta
First off, congratulations to the St Louis Blues for becoming the first-ever iNHL Stanley Cup Champions. While so much attention was focused on the numerous "Beasts in the East", the Blues' incredible season further proves the iNHL Western Conference was solid in its own right. We in Edmonton would like to think we helped prepare the Blues for their Stanley Cup run and realize the road to the 2016-2017 Stanley Cup Championship will have to pass through St Louis.
The iEdmonton Oilers and iColumbus Blue Jackets have completed a trade.
Dynamic young forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the 2017 3rd round pick (EDM) and the2017 3rd round pick (WAS) will be heading east to the Metropolitan Division, specifically Columbus, Ohio. In return, the iOilers will obtain the rights to USNTDP product and current University of University of Michigan player, defenseman Zach Werenski, as well as forward Jimmy Hayes and the 2016 1st Round Draft Pick (CBJ).
The IOilers would like to sincerely thank Ryan for his time here in Edmonton. His contributions to the team and to the community, both on-ice and off, are numerous and much too lengthy to list here. But it goes without saying his professionalism, his effort, his energy and his unbelievable skill will be missed. His is a superstar in the making and finally agreeing to trade him was one of the most difficult and gut-wrenching decisions we have had to make here in iEdmonton.
That said, in order to agree to move a player the caliber of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins dictates we receive something of great value in return, and we think we have. We feel this trade satisfies our needs on many different levels, most importantly being a young, smooth-skating, puck moving, potential franchise defenseman.
The iEdmonton Oilers couldn't be happier or more proud to welcome defenseman Zach Werenski to iEdmonton.
Zach has a strong understanding of the game and excels in key situations. He's able to execute under pressure, possesses excellent on-ice vision and uses his abilities to put offensive and defensive pressure on the opposition at both ends of the ice. All in all, he's a very strong all-around defenseman who consistently brings his A-game every night.
In addition, we feel we have addressed our need for grit and scoring on the wing with the addition of versatile forward Jimmy Hayes. Jimmy is a young, physical winger and is a team-first player who can slot into the Top-6 of our lineup if necessary, playing on both the left and right side of the ice. He also has acute hockey sense and on-ice vision as well.
Jimmy is indebted to iJackets GM Josh for his time in Columbus, but I'm told he's chomping at the bit to prove his time in Columbus was not indicative of his true abilities.
