Dreger Update: (Detroit, MI) The "Lizard" has indeed signed overseas but not with any of the teams originally reported, and as such has again entered contract talks with the Detroit Red Wings early this morning. He is expected to sign an ELC later this week, much to the relief of many Wings fans. Red Wing GM, M.W. Smith, had his usual tongue-in-cheek response to this news, "Yeah, I don't pay much attention to rumors, especially ones that are started by the diggers. And no, a hot dog is NOT a sandwich."
Dreger out.

Hearing rumors that recently acquired Red Wings center prospect Alan "Lizard" Lyszczarczyk has been in contract talks with a handful of Russian teams over the past few days. If true, this would put a dent in the rebuilding process that has just begun in Detroit by new Wings GM, M.W. Smith. When asked to comment, Smith said "I've heard all types of rumors, like Bigfoot was spotted in northern Maine, a hotdog is indeed a sandwich, and the NHL plans on expanding into the Las Vegas market. Until something concrete comes across my desk, I take it all with a grain of salt."
Dreger out.

My sources are telling me that Tiivola flew back to Finland late last night and has not yet made a decision where he wants to play next season. Rumor has it he is leaning towards the West Coast, so the LA Kings/San Jose Sharks/Anaheim Ducks appear to be the frontrunners but don't rule out a team like the Red Wings who have always had a strong Swedish and Finnish presence in the iNHL. We'll continue to monitor this situation in the coming days.

Heavily sought after Finnish sensation Peter Tiivola was seen joking around on the golf course with Teemu Selanne and Patrik Laine late last week and my sources are indicating that a move to the Detroit Red Wings or Anaheim Ducks could be forthcoming for the soon-to-be free agent. Tiivola had a 2018-19 stat line of 60/33/43/76, was a +17, and had 66 pm for the Pelicans. More to come.

Detroit confirms. We would like to specifically thank Danny DeKeyser for the leadership and dedication he brought to the city of Detroit and wish him well in the next stage of his iNHL journey.
Wayne Simmonds...we hardly knew ya and really could have used you 5 seasons ago.
Finally, we are excited to see what Hayden Davis can do in Detroit, and now he's closer to his summer home in Flint, Michigan (not really).

When Patrik Laine received the phone call that he was no longer a Buffalo Sabre, his initial reaction was one of bewilderment. Says Laine, "I was initially perplexed as to why the Buffalo Sabres would trade me away immediately after a career year and a near Stanley Cup run by the team. But after I took some time to talk it over with my girlfriend and my family, I realized this could be a blessing in disguise."
Fast forward a couple of days and Laine seems to have come to grips with the move, and although it will take some time to acclimate to a new team and new teammates, Laine appears to be ready to move forward with his hockey career. "I just want to be the best player I can be and help this team win. This is a great opportunity for me to play for one of the most successful franchises in the history of the NHL, and we have an up and coming young core that can grow together." said Laine. Things must be working out ok for him at the moment as he was spotted playing roller hockey with some of his Red Wings teammates in downtown Detroit earlier today. It remains to be seen how the trade will affect his on-ice performance, but if history is any indication the Wings will have a future superstar wearing the winged wheel next season.
A blessing in disguise, indeed.

Changes In Motown
April 9, 2019 DETROIT, MI - After two decades of stability at GM in the motor city, the Detroit Red Wings organization has announced a new GM for the second time in four seasons after hiring M.W. Smith as the new boss. “Change is inevitable, and we knew this was coming for a while now” said the Wings owner. “We’re excited for this change and the direction the franchise will now be headed” he continued. Smith, a former player and self-described ‘Armchair GM’, is just the third GM in Detroit since the beginning of the Ken Holland era in 1997. Nearly three decades later of making the playoffs, the Red Wings have found themselves on the outside looking in, and the owner felt it was time for a change. “An opportunity opened up for Wayne in Washington and I gave him my blessings. At the same time, we felt it was time to move in a different direction and the parting was mutual with no hard feelings. We wish him well in the nation’s capital, except when they play the Wings of course” he said, with a wink. Smith expressed excitement for the opportunity as well, and said as much. “As a lifelong Red Wings fan, this is a dream come true” he said. “Growing up in Michigan, watching this team with Yzerman, Lidstrom, Datsyuk, and Zetterberg; I’m ready to rebuild this great franchise and grow with a new generation of Wings’ greats.”
It remains to be seen what, if anything, Smith can do with the current roster prior to this year’s draft but he has high hopes of improving the culture in Detroit as quickly as possible. “I’m open to making moves that will improve this team, both now and in the future. In this league, if you remain stagnant you won’t remain competitive. We need to inject more youth to complement our veterans and make a run at the playoffs again” says Smith. “Right now, though, my first job is to assess the current roster and prepare for the draft. Then we can figure out what happens next over the next couple of months and go from there” he added.
